Coming soon: Professor John Deanfield

Two people in conversation on an orange sofa in The Dokkcast studio, with microphones in front of them

We are excited to feature Professor John Deanfield on The Dokkcast, coming soon.

Here is a short highlight from our conversation:

Who is Professor John Deanfield?

Professor John Deanfield CBE is a cardiologist and Professor of Cardiology at University College London (UCL). He trained in paediatric cardiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and in adult cardiology at the Hammersmith Hospital, and became a consultant cardiologist at Great Ormond Street in 1984.

His work has centred on two areas. The first is congenital heart disease. He was a key figure in establishing the care of adults born with heart conditions as a specialty, and in 2003 he chaired the European Society of Cardiology's task force on grown-up congenital heart disease.

The second is prevention. Professor Deanfield chaired the national JBS3 guidelines on preventing cardiovascular disease in 2014, led the 2021 review of the NHS Health Check, and in 2023 was appointed the UK government's first Champion for Personalised Prevention, leading a taskforce on how technology and data could help predict and prevent cardiovascular disease. He is also Director of the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR), which oversees one of the largest sets of cardiovascular health records in the world.

He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2001, and was appointed CBE in the 2021 Birthday Honours for services to the prevention and treatment of heart disease.

An Olympic fencer, too

Medicine was not his only early calling. At Cambridge, John Deanfield captained the university fencing team. He went on to represent Great Britain in sabre, in both the individual and team events, at the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, and he won the British sabre title in 1975. He later boycotted the 1980 Moscow Games.
